Dear Friends and Supporters,

Alexandra Buckmire, Head of School

I hope this letter finds you well. It’s certainly been a while since we’ve been in touch. So much has changed, both in our community and throughout the world. Since assuming the Head of School role in 2016, and for more than 20 years as a member of this incredible community, I can honestly say I’ve never witnessed such a unique and challenging school year as this past one. I am proud to share that our school is standing strong, and our school community is closer and more resilient than ever. In the face of an unprecedented public health crisis, we showed our ability to adapt and persevere to meet the needs of our families, and ensured our scholars were safe while continuing to learn.

Much of our success over the years has been attained because of you. For over 25 years we have continued to nurture our scholars with a truly unique environment and education. This effort would not have been possible without your support. We need and want to make every effort going forward to engage our past supporters as stewards of our efforts. I write to you today to invite you back to see where we now stand and the indelible impact that your past efforts have had on our community.

We have so much to be proud of when I think of our community. Our families faced so much uncertainty during this global pandemic, and responded with tremendous courage to support their children. Our teachers and staff were also inspiring, as they gracefully transitioned to working with students remotely and brought professionalism, patience, and compassion to their work. Most of all, I am proud of our Renaissance scholars, who worked hard and carried themselves with incredible maturity and determination throughout the year.

There is critical work ahead for our staff and entire school community. We will redouble our efforts, designing plans to deliver targeted, data-driven instruction to each of our young scholars when the new school year begins. We will also deepen our investment in our support of personnel and whole-child programs, ensuring we continue to serve as a foundation for our scholars’ healthy social, emotional, and physical development.

I thank you for all you have done, and encourage you to join us as we continue this journey. I’d like to extend an invitation for you to visit our beautiful campus at your convenience to share more about our efforts.  Please feel free to contact me at abuckmire@brcps.school. Your past partnership is so important to our future, and I hope you will re-engage with us in the future.  I look forward to hearing from you and hope you have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Sincerely,

Alexandra Buckmire
Head of School

Family Engagement

One of the true bright spots of this year was the increase in communication between teachers and families. For remote learning to succeed, families needed our support and we needed theirs. Everyone stepped up and did their part, working collaboratively for our students. In addition, BRCPS Family Engagement Coordinator, Ms. Rivera, shared information all year to help families access vital community resources. It was a true team effort and it made all the difference.

Whole Child Supports and Services
We believe quality mental health and social services are essential elements of an equitable public education. Each year, we invest in these critical staff positions and this year these services were more important than ever. Our support staff did an incredible job responding to students experiencing emotional and mental health challenges, working with their teachers and families to create a continuum of care and keep students on track

Taking Care of Our Families & Community
BRCPS distributed an average of over 1,700 freshly prepared meals per week, every week this school year. Whether we were in remote learning or in-person mode, our dedicated Dining Services team prepared free breakfast and lunch for students, their families and our community, totaling over 67,000 meals served.

In addition, BRCPS partnered with the City of Boston to open one of the city’s first drive through COVID Mobile Testing Centers. The site operated on our campus at a time when it was critically needed, December through March.

Celebrating our Graduates
On June 4th, we held an outdoor graduation ceremony for the BRCPS Class of 2021. Proud family members and staff celebrated our 59 Renaissance graduates, most of whom began their time with us in Pre-K. BRCPS graduates are moving on to attend Boston’s exam  schools, charter schools, and independent schools.

We are looking forward to the new school year, with all students returning to school in person. Please note, state education officials have ended remote learning in public schools, so families will no longer have that option. BRCPS will closely follow public health guidance related to COVID-19, as much of our young student population will likely not yet be eligible for vaccines.

As we return, we will be focused on ensuring students are ready to succeed at their new grade level, with the use of assessments and data for targeted instruction. Social-emotional learning will also remain a top priority and the start of the year will be carefully planned, as we will be welcoming many students back to school for the first time in 18 months.

We are pleased to announce the return of our After School program - registration information will be sent to all families this summer. Also, New England College of Optometry will be returning for in-person student eye exams. BRCPS has long valued vision care for students and we are happy to continue this important partnership. We will also be partnering with Boston Medical Center to offer a pop-up vaccine event this summer, and conducting a voter registration drive through October 1, 2021. Keep an eye out for emails from BRCPS with more info and other updates.

Have a wonderful summer!
