Boston Renaissance Charter Public School Spring Newsletter 2O24 |

Dear Renaissance Family and Friends, |
As we transition from the cold days of winter to the sun and warmth of Spring, there is so much happening here on campus. It’s so wonderful to see our scholars outside for recess, while inside our entire team is excited as we round the bend for the conclusion of yet another successful school year. |
As you will see from our latest edition of the Newsletter, we had many celebrations over the last few months, with a wonderful celebration of Black History month as well as Chinese New Year, and Women’s history month. I’m so proud of our scholars and staff who take great pride in celebrating our diversity. It has become quite a tradition for the Renaissance family and one that I hope you truly enjoy celebrating along with us.
This Spring, we will have a very busy slate of things happening here on campus, including our annual Character Day, Voices of Renaissance Spring Concert under our new Director Sasha White, our annual Field Day and another STEAM Day. I look forward to seeing you on campus and please don’t hesitate to touch base with any questions or suggestions you may have going forward.
Enjoy this beautiful weather!
Warmly,

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!! 新年快樂 Xīnnián kuàilè!
Boston Renaissance scholars from K1 through 6th grade participated in this year's annual Chinese New Year celebration, singing songs, dancing, writing and making artwork - ALL IN CHINESE! As part of the Boston Renaissance Global Education Initiative, Renaissance students learn Mandarin Chinese as a second language, beginning in Kindergarten and can continue all the way through 6th grade. BRCPS employs Mandarin instructors, who work with the students on acquisition, articulation, and comprehension through structured instructional practice, curriculum, and assessment. Growing up in Roxbury, DeShawn Gibbons always seemed to know that he was destined to help others. This belief was instilled in him at a very young age by Barbara Gibbons, his grandmother. She was his guiding light and the person whom he now attributes much of his success to. “She would always tell me to have two things for people, love and respect”.
He attributes another family as having a profound effect on who he is today, Boston Renaissance. A 2002 graduate, DeShawn is still very much in touch with many of his classmates and staff from the downtown campus.
| |
“The Renaissance was my family, it had such an impact on me that I can truly say it shaped who I am today. One person I will always be thankful for is Mr. Veale. Even today, I still stay in touch with him. He has had such an impact on my life and truly cared about me when I was a student at BRCPS, and he still does - he’s the best.” |
His memories flooded back during a recent conversation. When asked about one of his favorite moments, he said, “the play Romeo and Juliet in the basement gym with Mr. Allah was something I will always cherish”. Another great memory was the end of the year get together known as Olympic Week. I always looked forward to going to school because it made me such a better person in so many ways”. |

Today, DeShawn has truly taken a path for others with the creation of Prove Them Wrong, an invitation-only program providing high level training for boys and girls in grades 3-12 who are serious about becoming better athletes and committed to character development. DeShawn feels strongly that his Renaissance experience helps him leads these kids each and every day. “my time at the Renaissance instilled the confidence and values to believe in one’s self, I have always relied on that foundation.
When ask what advice he would give today’s Renaissance scholar, DeShawn said,
“Never stop being curious, always ask questions and have the perseverance to thrive”. The website for Prove Them Wrong is chock full of quotes from famous athletes, but when asked what his favorite quote is, DeShawn shared his own, “I didn’t let my roots direct my route”.
